How to Make Homeschooling More Fun
Since you are homeschooling, you might have wondered if there are ways you could bring some magic into your experience. Children will enjoy the experience if you worry less about the curriculum, and just focus on cherishing the moments you are having with them.
Granted, you would have to think differently if you and your kids are to have some fun out of the learning. It’s not just about the memorization and the workbooks and whatnot. To achieve that end of bringing some fun in your homeschooling experience, you’ll have to add creative and fun ideas to what you already have been using.
1. Add more games
Children love games as they relieve them of the pressures of learning. And with games, it’s not just about ball games, or track and field. Indoor games such as dominoes, tic-tac-toe, Chinese checkers, snakes and ladders to name but a few will add to the fun during learning. Not only do games boost early literacy and math skills but also improve on your child’s critical and problem solving skills.
2. Include some fun music
Music calms the mind and when incorporated during early morning lessons, the better. Once a week, you can invite a music teacher over for a lesson that can run up to an hour. Your children will appreciate that you thought out of the box and would love you more.
3. Celebrate milestones and achievements
If your child has understood a certain problematic concept or has even finished reading a book, you can take that as a reason to have a party at the end of the week.
4. Cook just before lunch break
Why not invite neighbors as you and your children prepare a mouth-watering delicacy. As you know, culinary skills acquired during such a period affect your children for a lifetime. What’s more, this will count as Home Economics time. And to make it even more fun, watch a cookery program and apply the skills afterwards. You can teach your child basic cooking techniques including peeling vegetables, slicing different fruits, reading a recipe, and even measuring ingredients.
5. Visit the nearest library
It is something exciting to just go out of the house. It’s even more fun when you are headed to the library with plenty of reading material. When you get there, however, let the children pick what to read instead of you dictating. That said, there’s more to the library than just the physical reading material. From storytelling session to read aloud, from puppet shows to video and digital resources, the library is surely a place with plenty to do and to have fun.
6. Nature walks
For P.E time, visit the nearest park with your children. It’s more fun that way and both of you will be getting some fresh air. As you leave the house, you can carry some lunch and eat it at the park. The park, however, is not the only place you can visit for some great outdoors. The following can count for PE time including hiking, fishing, camping, to name but a few.
7. Vary your teaching approach
Living in the twenty-first century means that you have a variety of media at your disposal to not only boost your child’s performance but also make learning more enjoyable. We have songs as teaching tools, games in all subjects, and YouTube videos.
8. Organize some field trips
Plan field trips carefully to different destinations. If you don’t want to join other homeschoolers in such trips you can go it alone. museums, national parks, animal orphanages, and zoos are places you can visit. By planning well, you can get discounts on entrance fees which will save you a lot.
9. Watch documentaries and films
Your child might be interested in a certain subject than in others. And that is to be expected. It’s up to you to further such curiosity by diving deeper into it through films and documentaries. You may be surprised that your child discovers some interests in other subjects as well.
10. What about some language classes
Going online to learn a different language can be fun to say the least. What’s more, your child will be able to not only respect other cultures but also appreciate their way of doing things. Learning a different language has been proven to improve memory, boost problem-solving skills and even increase attention span of children.
Pick a few of the above and slowly incorporate them into your homeschooling program. It’s a sure-fire way of bringing fun into your homeschooling program. At the end of the year, you’ll likely be surprised to realize that your child’s grades have improved and that you are closer to them than before.
